TICA TRAINING AT IPC ON MOSQUITO TAXONOMY - Ecomore Project

PHNOM PENH 27-28-29 August 2019

The support of the Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA) to ECOMORE project moved on to the operational phase at Institut Pasteur du Cambodge (IPC) from 27 to 29 August 2019.

TICA, in collaboration with IPC and the Faculty of Agriculture (Department of Entomology), Kasetsart University, co-organized a training course entitled “Mosquito Taxonomy” at the Medical Entomology Unit at IPC.

The main topics of the training covered handling of mosquitoes collected and preservation techniques; later on, lectures on morphology of Anopheles, Aedes, Culex and Mansonia and species keys for identification…

…combined with many practical sessions under microscope have improved capacity of CNM and IPC entomologists to identify mosquitoes.

A follow-up session is scheduled from 28 to 30 January 2020.

Success of this training course was mainly due to the experience and motivation of entomologists from CNM and IPC and to the remarkable interaction between all people involved in this course.

14 entomologists participated in this training:

  • 5 participants from the National Center for Parasitology, Entomology and Malaria Control (CNM) of the Ministry of Health
  • 6 participants from the Medical entomology Unit of IPC
  • 3 participants from Malaria Research Unit of IPC

This training was supervised by Prof. Theeraphap Chareonviriyaphap is currently a Professor at the Department of Entomology, Faculty of Agriculture, Kasetsart University, Bangkok, Thailand.

He was assisted by:

  • Miss Rungarun Tisgratog, Ph.D, lecturer at Department of Entomology, is working on mosquito biology, ecology, and their behavior.
  • Jirod NARARAK, Ph.D Candidate developing expertise in vector control approaches and phytochemistry.
  • Manop Saeung, master student on susceptibility of Aedes to Temephos and evaluation of LED traps against night biting mosquitoes.
