COMBI APPROACH IN KAMPONG CHAM PROVINCE - Ecomore Project

The project ECOMORE in Cambodia has planned to develop a COMBI approach (Communication for Behavioral Impact) that focus on developing Information, Education et Communication (IEC) tools and practical exercises for schoolchildren to learn good practices to limit population of Aedes at school and at home. Integration of this COMBI approach in the curriculum has been validated by the MoEYS.

Practical exercises for controlling breeding sites in school environment were conducted by the entomologists of IPC; they showed to the children that all small containers of water, especially rubbishes contain larvae of mosquitoes.

They also made presentations and displayed posters in the classrooms to remind good and bad practices and to explain Aedes cycle to better understand the risk for dengue transmission.

The COMBI approach includes a questionnaire which has been distributed before and after implementation of the project in the 12 schools with intervention and in the 12 schools without intervention to assess the impact of intervention on the schoolchildren knowledge and practices when they benefit of tailored information on mosquito and dengue.

Note that children from non-intervention schools have benefited of the IEC tools and lessons after the field study implementation.
Analysis of data is still pending and will be presented during the next Working Group planned in August 2019.

The final phase of the COMBI approach is the distribution of a reusable notebook cover showing how Aedes can multiply and transmit dengue. 6 stickers are included inside the cover, 3 in green color for good practices and 3 in red color for wrong practices (notebook and stickers)

This notebook has been developed by Mr. Oeng Rotana, the Communication Assistant for ECOMORE project who has tested the design among a panel of schoolchildren from 7 to 12 years before finalizing it.

A total of 11,000 will be distributed and explained to all schoolchildren from the 24 selected schools. The Directors of MoEYS in Tboung Khmum and Kampong Cham provinces were enthusiastic and suggested to provide the notebook to all schoolchildren in their province.

The first distributions started on 20-21 June 2019 to take opportunity of the mission of Mrs. Charlotte Le Layo, responsible of the communication at the Regional Office of AFD in Bangkok. The objective is to prepare a reportage and a photo exhibition on ECOMORE project activities in the 5 partner countries. She could meet directors and schoolteachers and she interviewed schoolchildren to assess impact of the project.
