REGIONAL TRAINING COURSE ON
“LEPTOSPIRES AND LEPTOSPIROSIS”
Initiated by the Institut Pasteur in New Caledonia (IPNC) and jointly organized with the Pacific Community, this course aimed at increasing the knowledge on leptospirosis, especially biology of Leptospires and epidemiology of the disease to reinforce surveillance, diagnosis and control of the disease in the region.
The director of the Pasteur Institute of New Caledonia, Vincent Richard said leptospirosis was often not recognized or misdiagnosed as dengue, malaria or influenza.
The Pacific Community’s Salanieta Saketa said there was limited data available for the region, partly due to a lack of understanding and the complexity of diagnosis.
Twenty-one medical specialists from around the Pacific, Cambodia, Myanmar and Vietnam will have enhanced knowledge and skills in diagnosis, treatment, vaccinations, surveillance and outbreak response

Academic and practical course
CAMBODIA (IPC), MYANMAR (NHL) and VIETNAM (NIHE) participated in the training in the framework of ECOMORE
The laboratory sessions have allowed participants to acquire or to reinforce capacities on:
- Serological diagnosis of leptospirosis: Rapid Tests, ELISA and Micro-Agglutination Technique
- Leptospira culture and isolation
- Molecular diagnosis of Leptospirosis by RT-PCR
Dr. Khin Nyein Zan, microbiologist at NHL (Myanmar) and Mrs. Nguyen Thuy Tram, microbiologist at NIHE (Vietnam) participated in this training course in the framework of ECOMORE project. Both countries will implement studies on Leptospirosis and risk factors; in urban and peri-urban settings in Yangon region and in various rural and climatic environments in Vietnam.
Leptospirosis disease is very complex and this one-week course and close interactive discussions with the experts has resulted in clarifying several issues, in improving the protocols of epidemiological studies and in relevant strategy of lab analysis.
This event gave the opportunity to develop the collaboration between ECOMORE project and IPNC; Dr. Cyrille Goarant, will become external expert for the Leptospirosis studies and the project will work together with Dr. Colleen Lau from the Department of Global Health at the Australian National University on awareness of the Medical Doctors involved in the studies.
